AfroCaledonia
an exhibition by artists of the Black Scottish diaspora

Ese Johnson, Philip Morrell, and Carla Angus are contemporary artists of colour  rooted in Scotland. Three distinct creative voices, they present AfroCaledonia, an exhibition exploring hybrid contemporary cultures. The show runs 9-22 October at  The Alchemy Experiment, 157 Byres Road, Glasgow, G12 8TS. 

Collectively, the artists examine the idea of connectedness within Black Scottish  communities. Johnson’s hand-built stoneware vessels take inspiration from the  textures and forms of Nigeria. Scottish materials blend with West African pattern  and imagery in Morrell’s mixed media collection. Angus combines thread with  

prints of Caribbean and Scottish foliage in artworks that reflect on connection and time.

Johnson says “As artists at various stages of life and experience, creating  AfroCaledonia has been an inspiring and uplifting journey. We hope to not only  spark conversation and interest in our work, but also the vast range of talent within  Scotland’s black creative community.”

The three artists linked up through membership of We Are Here Scotland, a  community organisation supporting black and global majority people across the  nation’s creative industries. The exhibition is supported by Creative Glasgow.
