The Alchemy Experiment is excited to announce the opening of our Creative Studios in the heart of the City Centre!

A welcoming new Creative Space where people can come together to learn, create, and share. While the focus will be on drawing and painting tuition, the space will also host a variety of creative classes and workshops throughout the year.

Learn Oil Painting with
Fiona Longley
A 5-day introduction course to oil painting course for beginners with artist Fiona Longley Alchemy Creative Studio.
Taking you from a blank canvas to a finished painting using simple classical techniques.
Course dates
Week One: 3rd - 7th Aug.
Week Two: 7th - 11th Sep.

Course Overview
Day 1 - How to See Like a Painter
Introductions and overview of materials. Learn why we tone the canvas and tone your own panel and linen. Set up a simple palette and create a basic block-in sketch of the subject.
Core Teaching: Painters don't copy objects - they see shapes, light, and shadow.
Day 2 - Values (The Foundation of Everything)
Learn what values are and why they matter. Create a full value study on toned linen.
Core Teaching: If the values work, the painting works. Learn to 'decode the middle'.
Day 3 - Understanding Colour
Introduction to colour mixing, warm vs cool, and paint behaviour. Create a colour study (poster study).
Core Teaching: Learn to mix colour with confidence and understand how paint behaves.
Day 4 - Building the Final Painting
Set up your main canvas. Draw and block in your subject, applying value and colour knowledge.
Core Teaching: Build the painting in layers, not all at once.
Day 5 - Finish Final Piece
Complete your main painting. Demonstration of varnishing and simple framing using a pre-prepared painting.
Core Teaching: Bring the painting together with final adjustments and details.
By the End of the Course
You'll understand the foundations of oil painting and complete your own finished piece.
A Different Kind of Art Class
This is not a 'copy step-by-step' class. You'll learn how to think like a painter so you can continue painting with confidence on your own.
