An Inch for Each of the Dead is a collaborative art project employing the intimate craft of quilting for a statement of global solidarity.
This large-scale memorial piece aims to represent each Palestinian life lost since Israel began the current phase of its genocide in October 2023 through a single square inch of fabric, creating a striking visualisation of the devastating and ever-growing human toll.
More than 250 artists around the world have joined the project, responding to a social media call that garnered over 400,000 views. The makers send in 10" x 10" quilt blocks, each containing 100 individual square inches. With at least 60,000 lives lost, the project requires at least 600 blocks to complete its memorial purpose. When assembled at four blocks, or 40 inches (one metre), in width, the banner will contain 150 rows of blocks, meaning it will measure at least 125 feet (38 meters) in total length.
Contributors have sent not only their carefully crafted blocks but also heartfelt personal letters describing their work and expressing their reasons for participating in this collective act of remembrance and protest.
The project is being shared in full on its instagram page, @aninchforeach, as the quilt is coming together.
A very incomplete list of notable and/or highly involved contributors includes Heidi Shadeck, Roberta Cummings, Elizabeth McMurtry, Rae Heller, Ellie Jailie Yap, Erin Bauchan-Caprara, Cait Nolan, DJ Steena, Éva Kiss-Torma, Laura Simpson, Laura Brown, Laura Gibbons, Lorna Mills, Lucy Strawson, Nell Nordlie, Paaras Abbas, Pilar Schmidt, Rachel Troutman, Tiegan Handley, Lauren Ayers, Eliot Anderberg, Hannah Hill, and Nina Hendrickson.
Every person involved in the making of this quilt has done so for a Free Palestine.
