Caman (Shinty stick) Anam (Soul), Gaelic

Shinty, or camanachd as it is known in Gaelic, is a historic team sport native to Scotland, believed to have existed in some form for centuries. Although it is played across the country, you would be forgiven for never having heard of it.

It is primarily played in the Highlands, where Gaelic culture remains particularly prominent. There are powerful links between the sport and cultural identity in these communities, bringing people together from across the country to compete in a number of cup competitions.

Having played for a small team when I was young, I began this project as a way of reflecting on and remembering that part of my childhood, when discovering a part of my Scottish identity was, in part, thanks to this sport. By the end of the project, I was fortunate enough to capture the sport at its finest, travelling to the heart of shinty in the Highlands and meeting the people and communities who keep the soul of the sport alive.
