" I am a visual artist drawn to capturing movement, colour, and light in a way that feels both familiar and dreamlike. My style blends abstract and surrealism — I use colours and shapes we recognise, but the worlds I create go beyond reality.
This collection is inspired by my time in Florence, where I became fascinated with painting fabric and exploring a glazing technique. As I wandered through the beautiful city and immersed myself in its art, I deepened my appreciation for Renaissance masters like Botticelli, whose ability to paint flowing fabric and heavenly compositions heavily influenced me.
As I have developed my technique in oils, my work has also become more emotionally driven, exploring deeper realisations about self-discovery and the symbolism of freedom across various cultures, faiths, and creative writings.
Freedom is a concept that holds deep meaning. I’ve been reflecting on what it truly represents, - both in my personal life and my faith journey - and that exploration has shaped the art I produce. My goal is to create paintings that offer a sense of restoration, solitude, and peace, transporting the viewer to a place beyond the everyday."
Dawn Spence is a Glasgow-based artist with a deep passion for abstract art. After earning an honours degree in Contemporary & Fine Art, she went on to study education and spent four years teaching Art, Design, and Photography in secondary schools. In August 2024, she answered the undeniable call to dive fully into her art practice.
Recognised as an emerging talent, she received a Creative Scotland Grant in 2021, fuelling the development of her work. Her solo exhibitions, Flourish at the New Glasgow Society and Encounter at BOX Hub highlight her evolving style and unique perspective on her view of the world. She has also exhibited at several galleries across Scotland, including the Royal Scottish Academy, Lemond Gallery, and the Royal Glasgow Institute.
Dawn’s work is guided by intuition—she paints with decisiveness, allowing ideas to unfold naturally. Often, the message reveals itself only after the painting takes shape, making this discovery a key part of her process. Since 2016, her fascination with water and movement has been a constant source of inspiration though her approach to capturing it has evolved in many ways.
