 FREE ENTRY

As well as the huge milestone of ten years in business, 2023 marks a period of transformation for Paulin. A visual rebrand represents a new commitment to our values, a change in the core team, and a new partnership with our friends and fellow watch brand, anOrdain. As we aim to move away from large scale production and towards a leaner model, we are putting our focus on quality, and introducing a new level of transparency to the brand – an uncommon value in the watch industry.

Paulin has always been engaged in Glasgow’s creative community – showcasing small local artists and brands in our shop, in exhibitions, and through our Art On The Subway initiative. So, what better way to celebrate ten years of Paulin with not one – but five – artist collaborations?

We invited five Scotland-based artists – David Lemm, Inès Gradot, Jim Ramsay, John Nicol and Tessa Mackenzie – to reinterpret the dial of our best-selling wall clock. The result is 25 completely original artworks which use a variety of techniques, including screen printing, risograph, and enamel-based paint.

INÈS GRADOT CLOCK COLLECTION

The Inès Gradot Clock Collection is a collaboration between Paulin and the artist, Inès Gradot. Each dial has been individually designed and riso-printed by Inès at Risotto Studios in Glasgow.

Inès uses illustration as a way of responding to her environment, playfully fusing hand-drawn and digital techniques. The risograph clock collection depicts dream-like scenes without a clear era or time of day; flowers blooming at night, migrating birds and people, and sunrises and sunsets projected on the Moon.

Each of the five clocks is a one-off and has been signed by the artist.

The clock is made from cork and aluminium with a sweeping second hand.

DAVID LEMM CLOCK COLLECTION

The David Lemm Clock Collection is a collaboration between Paulin and the artist, David Lemm. Each dial has been individually designed and screen printed in Edinburgh.

David’s practice is informed by encounters with place, process and artefact. For his clock collection, David began with the drawn outline of a piece of tram track, which he then split into graphic linear motifs. Playing with traditional hour markers, each dial uses 12 of these deconstructed elements in unique combinations. The work references the notion of non-linear time, and specifically how time behaves differently when engaged in the creative process.

Each of the five clocks is a one-off and has been signed by the artist.

JOHN NICOL CLOCK COLLECTION

The Jim Ramsay Clock Collection is a collaboration between Paulin and the artist, Jim Ramsay. Each dial has been individually designed and screen printed in Jim's studio in the East End of Glasgow.

For this series of clock dials, Jim embraced the unpredictable nature of the screen printing process, improvising their layout and allowing glitches and overlaps to inform the outcome. His compositions are familiar but uncanny, drawing from his practice, where landscapes and urban scenes are abstracted into dreamscapes.

Each of the five clocks is a one-off and has been signed by the artist.

TESSA MACKENZIE CLOCK COLLECTION

The Tessa Mackenzie Clock Collection is a collaboration between Paulin and glazier and illustrator, Tessa Mackenzie. The dials were screen printed in Tessa's studio in the East End of Glasgow.

Tessa’s collection explores the process of designing for material. The work builds on an ongoing project; originally translating observational drawings into tapestry patterns, then to glass, and then Dibond. This playful process – a kind of visual game of telephone – aims to articulate the relationship between pattern and material.

Each of the five dial designs is an edition of two and has been signed by the artist.

The clock is made from cork and aluminium with a sweeping second hand.

JIM RAMSAY CLOCK COLLECTION

The John Nicol Clock Collection is a collaboration between Paulin and the artist, John Nicol. Each dial was individually hand-painted in John’s studio in Glasgow.

The collection builds on John’s slow-evolving painting practice. The work is full of contradictions: the discord between the impulse to create something aesthetic and the impulse to destroy it, and the search for a balance of form and colour between the two.

Each of the five clocks is a one-off and has been signed by the artist.

The clock is made from cork and aluminium with a sweeping second hand.
