New Kids On The Road: An Exhibition

When it emerged on the scene in 1995, Subcity Radio was very much one of the new kids on the block. Since then, thirty one years have passed, and the freeform radio has gone a long way from its origins as a pirate station operating out of a disused student flat on Murano Street. Nurtured by a team of dedicated volunteers, the station, which once only graced the airwaves for fleeting moments, now broadcasts on a permanent basis from its studio on the University of Glasgow campus. You can tune in from anywhere, at any time, and listen to almost anything. The ability to do so has only solidified the station’s reputation as an organisation built on a love for music and community. 

Though the station may be synonymous with its broadcasts, Subcity has always been about more than just radio. Since the early days, it has cultivated a reputation for throwing a good party. Beginning with launches and closes for its FM broadcasts at venues like The Renfrew Ferry, The Arches and The Arts School, these parties quickly grew into all kinds of events, each with a theme more wacky and wonderful than what came before. This exhibition is the station’s latest venture: a tribute to the city that has embraced its weirdness, and continues to shape the radio’s legacy.
