BRIEF:

After the incredible response we received over the past three years with Love in the Time of Covid (2020), Love & Chaos (2021) and It'll Be Alright (2022), Alchemy's annual open call for art opens its doors once again. 
 
"Curtains" invites artists from all backgrounds to explore and interpret the theme in its diverse forms.  Beyond their tangible existence, curtains symbolise a variety of meanings, serving as both objects and metaphors for mystery, revelation, transitions, and privacy.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly and to take it in any direction they wish, considering cultural, historical, personal, or societal perspectives. We look forward to a diverse and original collection of artworks.

• Applications for our fourth open call are now open. Please fill the form below to submit your work.

​

• International artists (18+) all levels are welcome.

​​

• Only applications in English will be accepted. 

​

• All entrants are attesting that the images submitted are their own work and there has been no copyright infringement of any artist, living or deceased. All submissions must be original and completed by the artist’s hand.

​

• Successful submissions will appear in our publication, which will be produced by our curators and realised in May 2024.

​

• Of these published artwork, a selection will be chosen to appear in the physical exhibition opening on 2nd May 2024 at The Alchemy Experiment, 157 Byres Road, Glasgow. The show will be on for 3 weeks.

​

• If selected to feature in the exhibition, artists will have the opportunity to sell their work with a commission of 40% on sold work.​

​

• All artists chosen to take part in the exhibition will also appear in the publication. Not all artists included in the publication will be in the exhibition. 

​

• Curators will select one winner to be awarded with a solo show in 2025.​

​

• Cass Art will also select their artist for 2024 (prizes to be announced).

​

• By submitting your work, you grant the gallery a limited license to use your images for promotional materials and/or promoting related programs and display. The artist's name and work title will be included and they will receive attribution whenever possible. The artist retains all rights to their work at all times. Images will not be used by The Alchemy Experiment aside from the print issue, interviews, social media posts.

• If your work is selected, you'll receive further information by email with the results. By submitting the form you are agreeing to be contacted by The Alchemy Experiment via email correspondence. 

​

• The artist submitting their work understands that inclusion is not guaranteed as this is a juried opportunity.
  Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity, technical skill, and overall impact.

• ​We aim to finalise our decision by the 15th March 24, but please allow up to a month to receive your results.

GUIDELINES:

​

​

• There is a £2 fee to submit your work.
  If you are not able to pay the fee, please get in touch by email to staff@alchemyexperiment.com

​

•  You can submit up to 3 artworks. Submit your strongest piece first and order them 1-3. Include this number in the file name.
  Your files should be named as follow: NameSurname(1), NameSurname(2), NameSurname(3)

​

• Be sure to submit accurate dimensions (in cm) of your work (unframed). If submitting a digital artwork, please refer to the dimensions you would print your work if selected for the exhibition.

​

• Please present your work well.
  Supply high resolution, good quality photographs of your work as these will be the images we feature in the book. Please try to avoid unnecessary background, shadows and unnatural light when photographing your work.

​

• Artist bio and supporting statement of your work are required at this stage and will be included in the publication. Artists will have the opportunity to make edits before the release of the publication, if necessary. 

​

• There is no extra fee to be included in the publication.
   

• There is an install fee of £10 for artists selected to take part in the exhibition. The fee will cover admin costs, materials, promotion, curatorial and install work.

​

• Artists are responsible for delivering and collecting their work and ensuring it is install-ready. ​
